A visionary in interior design of airships
Max Pinucci’s designer journey is one of innovation and passion. Reflecting on his unique professional trajectory that led him to the Head of Design role at OceanSky Cruises, he shared:
“My fascination with airships began like 15 years ago, when I visited the Zeppelin Museum. My innate curiosity for aviation evolved into an entire career where I’ve merged history, design, and functionality to redefine what air travel can be.”
Pinucci’s journey is rooted in a vast expertise that spans aeronautical interiors, human-machine interfaces, and vehicle ergonomics. His Tuscany-based studio, MBVision, has contributed to designing transportation systems across Europe, and as a lecturer at ISIA Firenze, he continues to push the boundaries of design thinking. Max is also the author of AIRSHIPS: Designed for Greatness | The Illustrated History, a work that combines art, history, and reference in equal measure. Adding to his hands-on aviation knowledge as a sports pilot, Pinucci ensures that every aspect of these airships is both safe and functional – and luxurious.
First things first: What is what in an airship?
To truly appreciate the evolution of airship design—an innovation that began in the late 19th century—it’s important to distinguish its main components.
An airship, also known as a dirigible, is a large, buoyant aircraft that achieves lift through a gas-filled envelope. This envelope, typically containing helium or hydrogen, provides the structure’s shape and buoyancy. Beneath the envelope is the gondola, the heart of the passenger experience and operational control.
The gondola, often referred to as the cabin, is where everything happens—it houses the passenger and crew areas, as well as the controls for navigating the airship. It is distinct from the envelope, focusing entirely on functionality and comfort for those on board. Engines for propulsion are typically mounted either on the gondola or the hull, working in harmony with control surfaces like fins and rudders to ensure stability and manoeuvrability during flight.
When exploring the design of OceanSky Cruises’ airships in this article, it is specifically the gondola that is in focus. This is where passengers will spend their journey, enjoying luxurious interiors tailored for comfort and adventure. The gondola will be central to the customer experience, merging state-of-the-art design with practicality to create a truly memorable airship journey.
A quick look back: The legacy of airship interior design
“Even the most modern aircraft today owe something to the past. Airships were once imagined as flying boats, then trains, and eventually as luxurious floating hotels. The Hindenburg, for instance, remains conceptually 100 years ahead of today’s airplanes. This legacy inspires us to think creatively and sustainably for the future.”
Max Pinucci
Airships have a storied history, emerging in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as marvels of engineering. Originally designed for military use, surveillance, and long-distance transportation, these lighter-than-air vessels offered capabilities unmatched by other forms of aviation at the time.
The gondola, located beneath the envelope, housed the crew, passengers, and essential equipment, contributing to the airship’s overall stability and aerodynamics. The iconic Zeppelins, in particular, captured the imagination of travelers with their elegant, serene journeys across oceans, combining luxurious accommodations with panoramic views of the world below.
For the early passengers, an airship voyage was not just about reaching a destination—it was about experiencing the journey in unparalleled comfort and style. And as a matter of fact, at that time airships where also the only way to make long distance flights. However, despite their grandeur, airships fell out of favor with the advent of faster airplanes, and tragedies such as the Hindenburg disaster in 1937 cast a shadow over their future. Over time, the rapid pace of airplanes and cheap supply of oil became the preferred mode of air travel, but airships left a lasting legacy, embodying the romance and adventure of early aviation, a legacy that is now being revived with modern innovations.
The Hindemburg

The interiors were designed by Fritz August Breuhaus. A stylized world map covered the wall of the lounge. The public areas were designed to provide comfort and an ample socializing space for passengers

The “A deck” contained the airship’s dinning room decorated with paintings on silk wallpaper depicting scenes from the Graf Zeppelin’s flights to South America. The tables and chairs were designed using lightweight tubular aluminum with the chairs upholstered in red.
The R100 Airship: Redefining elegant design in aeronautics
The R100 airship, a British marvel of the 1920s, epitomized the elegance and ambition of early aviation. Built by the British company Vickers, the R100 was part of a series of airships intended for commercial passenger transport. Its design featured a streamlined, elongated shape that contributed to its aerodynamics, enhancing lift and reducing drag, although not without problems. The R100 was constructed using a combination of duraluminum and a light, flexible fabric, which allowed for a sturdy yet lightweight structure. The airship was powered by six Rolls-Royce Condor engines, providing a cruising speed of around 64 mph or 103 km/h. Its gondola housed a spacious interior designed to accommodate passengers with comforts akin to those found on luxury liners or ocean cruise liners, including dining facilities and observation areas that offered stunning views of the landscape below.
One of the notable features of the R100 was its innovative gas cell design, which allowed for increased safety and efficiency. The airship utilized hydrogen. The R100’s maiden voyage in 1930 from Britain to Canada showcased its potential for long-distance travel, marking a significant milestone in airship history. However, it was the ill-fated R101, which embarked on its maiden flight shortly after the R100, that ultimately underscored the inherent risks of airship travel. The R101 tragically crashed during its maiden overseas journey in 1930, leading to a reevaluation of airship safety protocols and marking the decline of the airship era.
Despite its impressive design and capabilities, the R100’s legacy remains intertwined with the lessons learned from its counterpart, the R101, highlighting the balance between ambition and caution in the pursuit of innovation. Ultimately, the R100’s design represents a testament to early 20th-century innovation in air travel, embodying a unique blend of luxury, technology, and ambition.
The R100

The design team came up with a three deck design, where the passengers could enjoy a two deck area with the crew on the third bottom deck.

The new era: Sustainable luxury airships
Fast forward to today. At OceanSky Cruises, Max Pinucci is spearheading the design of airships that redefine travel—offering a blend of cutting-edge sustainability and timeless luxury.
These vessels combine sustainability with luxury, offering an entirely new approach to travel that meets the growing demand for eco-friendly solutions. In an age where aviation is under intense scrutiny for its environmental impact, airships are back on everyone’s lips as a viable alternative for low-emission travel. With their low carbon footprint, airships operate using lighter-than-air technology (LTA technology) and require significantly less fuel than traditional airplanes, making them far more environmentally sustainable.
Moreover, as the world faces mounting pressure to combat climate change, airships offer a solution that aligns perfectly with the call for green innovation in transportation. While air travel has historically been seen as a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, airships offer a slower, more sustainable mode of travel that prioritizes the journey as much as the destination. The airships designed for OceanSky Cruises represent floating five-star hotels, blending timeless elegance with cutting-edge technology, making them a convenient, pleasant and eco-conscious choice for the modern traveler.
The Graf Zeppelin

Accommodation aboard was provided in 10 small berth cabins that were arranged for day or night use. Unlike the Hindenburg, the Graf Zeppelin cabin’s were unheated at the time.

he only public passenger space was the lounge/dinning room. In 1929, the menu served on the Los Angeles to Lakehurst flight comprised Honey Dew Melon au Citron, Hungarian Goulash, Cold Asparagus Vinaigrette, Eclairs and Coffee. The first fine dinning restaurant in the skies.
A state of the art design based on lightness, sustainability and elegance
OceanSky Cruises’ airship design will be designed around the principle of lightness, focusing on materials that minimize weight without compromising on luxury. By employing lightweight, high-quality materials, the interiors would achieve a balance of spaciousness and energy efficiency.
The rooms and cabins are to be designed to be both luxurious and adaptable, tailored to meet the needs of various journeys. For example, during Arctic expeditions, the airship could accommodate snowmobiles and provide specialized drying areas for heavy winter gear after polar adventures. In contrast, for trips to warmer destinations such as the tropics, the spaces could be reconfigured to include extra storage or cooling areas, perfectly suited to the environment.
OceanSky Cruises’ interiors are planned to highlight ingenious solutions that marry functionality with comfort. A notable planned feature is the bedroom’s versatile bed system, mounted on rails, which effortlessly would transform from a king-size bed into two single beds to suit travelers’ preferences. Another striking detail in the making is the integration of sofas into the structural beams, a design that seamlessly combine engineering precision with refined aesthetics to create a welcoming and sophisticated atmosphere. Additionally, the kitchen is planned to be cleverly situated directly above the panoramic restaurant area, connected by a compact food elevator that ensures efficient service while maximizing space and maintaining the airship’s elegant design.
Accessibility is also a key consideration in the planning phase. The airship will be designed to ensure freedom of movement for all passengers, including those using wheelchairs, with cabins and corridors optimized for easy navigation. This commitment ensures that luxury travel remains inclusive and enjoyable for everyone.
Panoramic windows in every cabin would allow passengers to take in breathtaking views from all angles, enhancing the journey with a constant connection to the changing landscapes. Plush, high-end materials, combined with ergonomic design, would create an indulgent atmosphere that transforms air travel into an elevated, immersive experience.
Max Pinucci, OceanSky Cruises’ Head of Design, captures the spirit of this innovation:
“Our interiors reflect a blend of futuristic vision and vintage inspiration. Every detail, from the spacious cabins to the adaptability for different climates, is crafted to ensure safety, comfort, and a touch of timeless luxury.”
Luxury travel reimagined: The journey as the experience
